    Self-organizing lists on the Xnet

    The first parallel designs for implementing self-organizing lists on the Xnet interconnection network are presented. Self-organizing lists permute the order of list entries after an entry is accessed according to some update hueristic. The heuristic attempts to place frequently requested entries closer to the front of the list. This paper outlines Xnet systems for self-organizing lists under the move-to-front and transpose update heuristics. Our novel designs can be used to achieve high-speed lossless text compression

    Virus-transformed pre-B cells undergo ordered immunoglobulin (Ig) gene rearrangements during culture. We devised a series of highly sensitive polymerase chain reaction assays for Ig gene rearrangement and unrearranged Ig gene segment transcription to study both the possible relationship between these processes in cultured pre-B cells and the role played by heavy (H) chain (mu) protein in regulating gene rearrangement. Our analysis of pre-B cell cultures representing various stages of maturity revealed that transcription of each germline Ig locus precedes or is coincident with its rearrangement. Cell lines containing one functional rearranged H chain allele, however, continue to transcribe and to rearrange the allelic, unrearranged H chain locus. These cell lines appear to initiate but not terminate rearrangement events and therefore provide information about the requirements for activating rearrangement but not about allelic exclusion mechanisms

    I-V curves and intergranular flux creep activation energy in the magnetic superconductor RuSr2GdCu2O8

    A systematic study of I-V characteristic curves for RuSr2GdCu2O8 [Ru-(1212)] is presented, with magnetic fields up to 3 T and 5 K<T<30 K, in the region of the superconducting transition. The activation energy E_{a}(H,T) for flux line depinning was determined by fitting the nonlinear region of the curves using the flux creep model. E_{a}(H,T) was found to vary linearly with temperature, while a power-law dependence on the magnetic field was observed up to H=0.1 T, where an abrupt reduction in its decreasing rate occurs. The extrapolated value, E_{a}(0,0)=50 meV, is twice the reported value for YBa2Cu3O7, but the critical current density J_{C}(0,0)=70 A/cm2 is about one order of magnitude lower. These results are explained as a consequence of the contribution of the magnetization in the grains to the effective field at the intergranular links and to a spin-flop transition of the Ru-sub-lattice.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    An Analysis of Applications Development Systems for Remotely Sensed, Multispectral Data for the Earth Observations Division of the NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center

    An application development system (ADS) is examined for remotely sensed, multispectral data at the Earth Observations Division (EOD) at Johnson Space Center. Design goals are detailed, along with design objectives that an ideal system should contain. The design objectives were arranged according to the priorities of EOD's program objectives. Four systems available to EOD were then measured against the ideal ADS as defined by the design objectives and their associated priorities. This was accomplished by rating each of the systems on each of the design objectives. Utilizing the established priorities, it was determined how each system stood up as an ADS. Recommendations were made as to possible courses of action for EOD to pursue to obtain a more efficient ADS

    Social desirability (SD) represents the problem of subjects responding with social norms rather than individual values. This paper briefly surveys the SD literature and considers its relevance for contingent valuation (CV) studies. In an empirical study, undergraduate students were administered the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale, as well as CV questions. High SD scores were hypothesized to imply a greater likelihood of offering a protest reason for a zero bid and to increase bids for socially desirable commodities. While all hypotheses were not supported, the empirical results suggest that SD can influence CV responses and should not be dismissed prematurely.Research Methods/ Statistical Methods,

    Magnetic Order and Spin Dynamics in Ferroelectric HoMnO3_{3}

    Hexagonal HoMnO3_{3} is a frustrated antiferromagnet (TN_{N}=72 K) ferroelectric (TC_{C}=875 K) in which these two order parameters are coupled. Our neutron measurements of the spin wave dispersion for the S=2 Mn3+^{3+} on the layered triangular lattice are well described by a two-dimensional nearest-neighbor Heisenberg exchange J=2.44 meV, and an anisotropy DD that is 0.093 meV above the spin reorientation transition at 40 K, and 0.126 meV below. For HcH\parallel c the magnetic structures and phase diagram have been determined, and reveal additional transitions below 8 K where the ferroelectrically displaced Ho3+^{3+} ions are ordered magnetically.Comment: To be published in Physical Review Letter

    Instrumental and objectivist logics maintain a hegemonic place in Western scholarship, reasoning skills powerfully equipped to address certain dilemmas even as they may obscure other ways of knowing. In this chapter, we enlarge dominant notions of rationality by offering an aesthetic view of knowledge as vital for engaged communication scholarship. Our interest in aesthetic logics parallels concerns that have led scholars to develop feminist practices of inquiry (e.g., Harding, 1998; Hesse-Biber, 2007), interrogate the aesthetics of representations in West-centric knowledge structures from postcolonial and Subaltern Studies standpoints (e.g., Broadfoot & Munshi, 2007; Dutta, 2007, 2008), focus on autoethnographic and poetic accounts ( e.g., Carr, 2003; Ellingson, 2009), introduce reflexivity and the politics of personhood in the scholarly process ( e.g., Harding, 1991; Reinharz, 1992), and adopt narrative and dialogic understandings of knowledge constructions (e.g., Frank, 2005; Harter, 2005). Loosely coupled, these research trajectories advance alternative rationalities for witnessing and answering salient social issues. We argue for the theoretical and practical incorporation of aesthetic rationalities in engaged scholarship-logics of poss ibility that cultivate individuals \u27 capacities to imagine otherwise. Reimagining scholarly inquiry to reflect and embrace aesthetic logics requires us to rethink our methods of data collection, analysis, and representation and our own roles as researchers and writers . When we resist the art/science dichotomy, opportunities abound for sensemaking and representation that embody aesthetic ways of knowing. Furthermore, rejection of dichotomous thinking opens up possibilities for listening to ways of knowing that lie beyond the realm of Eurocentric knowledge structures (Dutta, in press). Even after the interpretive turn, instrumental and objectivist logics often underlie and sometimes constrain the processes and products of social scientific research (Denzin & Lincoln, 2005). Traditional structures and modes of research offer important but limited conceptualizations of knowing. We can open ourselves to other ways of asking questions that include overt attention to aesthetic sensibilities . We need not reject or abandon traditional modes of research. Instead, we can enlarge the realm of possibilities for what counts as accepted research practices and advance methods for studying the aesthetic nature of communal life (Ellingson, 2009). In this chapter, we develop an understanding of rationality that incorporates imagination, and we explore methodologies that draw on creative sensibilities. We then articul ate the salience of creativity for rendering credible previously subjugated voices, and we articulate its value for engaged communication theory and research

    The use of the Winograd matrix multiplication algorithm in digital multispectral processing

    The Winograd procedure for matrix multiplication provides a method whereby general matrix products may be computed more efficiently than the normal method. The algorithm and the time savings that can be effected are described. A FORTRAN program is provided which performs a general matrix multiply according to this algorithm. A variation of this procedure that may be used to calculate Gaussian probability density functions is also described. It is shown how a time savings can be effected in this calculation. The extension of this method to other similar calculations should yield similar savings
